Two problems with standard cotton

When you think of cotton, you see it as a natural product, since it essentially comes from the cotton plant. Almost every day, you are likely to wear cotton clothing or sleep in cotton sheets. What most people don't know, is the impact the cotton industry has on our environment. Cotton production not only requires enormous amounts of water, but cotton farmers also abundantly use pesticides that pollute the earth and the ground water. Also during the production process, lots of chemicals are being used. All this makes cotton production one of the most polluting industries in the world.

When it comes to sportswear, there is also a technical disadvantage in cotton. A cotton sports shirt doesn't have the best sweat absorption qualities. Contrary to polyester, cotton will absorb the moisture and get heavier, something that will often feel less comfortable.

Two problems with standard polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fibre that is basically made of plastic. It is made from so called petrochemicals and so it is actually a crude oil derivative. Polyester is often used in the fashion industry and this for several reasons. It is relatively cheap, keeps its form and especially in sportswear, polyester has the advantage of keeping the body cool and dry. Unfortunately, not everything in this story is positive. By wearing polyester clothing, you contribute to the already huge problem of plastic waste on our planet. And then we don't even mention the large quantities of water and energy required for the production process.

Just like cotton, polyester also has a technical disadvantage when used in sportswear. Even though 90% of sportswear is made from polyester because of the breathing and non-absorbing character of the fabric, it also has the annoying quality of holding on to sweat odors.  This is caused by the fact that certain bacteria grow faster on polyester than for instance cotton. And that is exactly the reason why your sports shirt smells so bad after your workout.

The Astyla Hybrid T-shirt: the best of both worlds

Imagine not having to choose. Imagine getting all the best qualities in 1 t-shirt. A shirt that keeps its form when it is being stretched or washed while keeping you cool and dry without the annoying scent of sweat. And above all: a t-shirt that ensures a positive contribution to our environment.

Impossible? Not at all. Our Astyla hybrid t-shirts are made from a mix of recycled polyester and recycled bio cotton. And that is not a mistake. While the recycled  polyester in our shirts comes from PET-bottles, we have also found a t-shirt that doesn't just use organic cotton, but actually recycles left overs from the production process. This way, Astyla delivers maximum performance with a minimum footprint.

Our hybrid t-shirt proudly wears the Salvage symbol and is made of 60% pre-consumer recycled bio-cotton and 40% post-consumer recycled polyester. This results in a high quality product that feels soft on the skin and is 100% recycled is.
